This section or meme is call Book Cover Battle, the first time I saw it was at Books Passion for Life as UK vs US  and  Bookaholics book club as UK vs The World but because I don´t live in the UK, I can´t name it that way, so for now is Book Cover Battle .

This week book cover battle is

I kind of like all the book covers, there something about them that catch my eye, even the spanish cover, it gives me the idea that this a middle grade book, but my favorites are both US covers.

Review: Avalon by Mindee Arnett

Title: Avalon (Avalon #1)
Author: Mindee Arnett
Publisher: Balzer & Bray
Release date: January 21st 2014
Source: Edelweiss
Format: eARC

Rating: 4/5

Buy onAmazon | B&N | BookDepository
A ragtag group of teenage mercenaries who crew the spaceship Avalon stumble upon a conspiracy that could threaten the entire galaxy in this fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi adventure from author Mindee Arnett.

Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they're damn good at it. Jeth doesn't care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents' ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he'll go to get the freedom he's wanted for so long.

Avalon is the perfect fit for teens new to sci-fi as well as seasoned sci-fi readers looking for more books in the YA space-and a great match for fans of Joss Whedon's cult hit show Firefly.

I really enjoyed Avalon, I had no idea what to expect from it because it´s compared a lot with Firefly (TV series), but since I never saw the series this was new to me, so I started reading it only with the idea that it was a science fiction book that takes place in space and that the main character is a thief.

Avalon is about a group of teenage thieves that are out to steal spaceships and their new mission is to enter the Belgrave Quadrant (this is a sort of Bermuda triangle in space) and take/retrieve a space ship that had been missing  formore than two months, and supposedly is carrying a very valuable weapon and their boss wants what's on that ship, because is invaluable but as usual complications arise and there is where the story becomes interesting.

The teenagers mercenaries known as Malleus Shades which is led by Jeth a seventeen year-old guy, his parents were explorers working for the ITA(Interstellar Transport Agency), they were accused of treason against the Confederation and were executed, so now he lives with his uncle, his younger sister and three more members that complete the crew (and mercenary group); they all work under the orders of an unscrupulous and quite dangerous criminal-lord, but Jeth dreams about buying Avalon from their boss and been captain of his own spaceship.

Overall, what I liked most of he book is that is action-packed, with some mystery and quite a few interesting twists in the plot. And it was fun to read the interaction and camaraderie among Jeth and his crew, I think this is one of my favorite parts of the book, this group of young misfits are great and lovable characters and I can not wait to read more about them and really hope a little more development on Celeste, Shady and Flynn. Something that I didn´t see the case was the attempt to romance, because I felt it very flat and without much chemistry and totally unnecessary. But nevertheless, I really liked this first book in the Avalon duology and I can not wait to read Meridian.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.

Review: Burn by Julianna Baggott

Title: Burn (Pure #3)
Author: Julianna Baggott
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

Source: Netgalley
Format: egalley

Rating: 3.5/5

You can read my review of Pure - hereFuse - here
Inside the Dome, Patridge has taken his father's place as leader of the Pures. His struggle has led him here, intent upon bringing down the Dome from the inside, with the help of a secret resistance force. But things are not as simple from his new position of power and he finds himself tempted by his father's words: perhaps if the world is to survive it needs the Dome - and Partridge - to rule it...

As Partridge's resolve weakens, Pressia and Bradwell continue piecing together the clues left to them from the time before the Detonations. It is their hope that they will be able to heal the Wretches, and free them from their monstrous fusings and the Dome's oppression once and for all. But everything depends, too, on Partridge. Separated by distance and history, can they still trust their friend and ally? Or is the world doomed to an eternity of war and hardship?

Burn is a book that I  was impatiently waiting to read, so my expectations were sky-high, so although the book didn´t met all my expectations at the end, I really enjoy it, even though I have problems with the ending.

This book begins about a month from where the previous book was left, so Patridge is the ruling power inside the dome or at least that´s what it seems, but despite having been in power for a month he hasn´t achieved nothing of what he expected to help the wretches. Meanwhile Pressia, Bradwell, Captain and Helmud are still in Ireland trying to recover from what happened to them, take back the formula and go home to do their part and with Partridge help to heal and remove the fusing from the wretches.

I'm always a bit apprehensive when I´m reading the final book in a trilogy or series, because I always have an idea of what I want or expect to happen with the story, but it rarely happens what I want and I'm a little afraid that I may not like the end, due to remaining unanswered questions, etc, etc.; but I had great expectations but I also didn´t want it to end that´s why I tried to prolong it the more I could because I wanted to enjoy it. In Burn there is less action than on the previous books because the plot is more focused on trying to balance or show both sides of the coin, since the Pures want and think they are the chosen ones, that they are right and are the wretches should be permanently eliminated. Meanwhile the wretches, think and want to make them pay (the Pures) for what they did to them and the world.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, but I felt that the pace of the book was a little slow in the first part of the book and adding to that the jumping between four different point of views there were times when I desperate because I wanted to know what was going to happen to the dome, the Pures and the wretches. Regarding the main characters there were times when I was frustrated with Lyda, Partridge and Bradwell mainly because of the decisions they were making (no! why?!), but I loved Pressia, el Captain and Helmud. And the ending ..... I'm still processing it, is not the end I would have liked or expected, but that end is maybe what must happen for the characters have a different future, it was realistic, but I felt it a little rushed and left me with some unanswered questions.
I really enjoyed this trilogy and I definitely recommend the Pure trilogy, to those that like a little dark and raw post-apocalyptic/dystopic novels.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

Vivi’s animal instincts are her legacy—and maybe her downfall—in this start to a romantic fantasy series that will appeal to fans of The Nine Lives of Chloe King.

Vivi has known the truth about her family—and herself—since she was thirteen. But that doesn’t mean she’s accepted it. Being Haguari isn’t something she feels she’ll ever accept. How can she feel like anything but a freak knowing that it’s in her genes to turn into a jaguar?

Now eighteen, Vivi’s ready to break away from the traditions of her heritage. But all of that changes with the shocking, devastating deaths of her parents and the mysteries left behind. Vivi discovers family she never even knew she had, and a life open with possibility. New friends, new loyalties, and even romance all lay ahead—but so do dangers unlike anything Vivi ever could have imagined.
Darkest Fear is a book I was eager to read and that caught my attention because the main character is transformed into a jaguar, and I really like books about shifters and was intrigued to see how they handled the origins of these Haguaris. But the truth is that I struggle a lot with this book, I was about to drop it because I felt that nothing was happening when in fact they were a lot of things happening because Vivi and her parents are attacked by a jaguar and from the attack only Vivi survives, she is devastated, she doesn´t kkow what to do without her parents and all her relatives live in Brazil, but she didn´t want to move or going for a short visit, so because she has eighteen years old, doesn´t need a guardian and can stay living in the parental home.

But searching through the important documents from her parents, she discovers something that makes her travel to New Orleans, where she meets new friends, find a job and begins to accept her legacy a bit, because until that moment she hated the fact of being a Haguari and wanted no part of it, but in this new environment she begins to see gradually that being Haguari is not been a monster, and that been a Haguari isn´t the worst thing that could happen to her in the world. So between rediscovering her heritage, making new friends, meeting a guy that she´s attracted to and try to discover what really happened to her parents, Vivi starts to get away from the deep depression that she had.

As a main character I didn´t like Vivi that much, maybe it can be that I got to see a Vivi  tha´s devastated by the death of his parents, with terrible feelings of guilt and falling into a severe depression, so during the most of the book she cries a lot and rightly so for what happen to her, but I just do not like her character.

Overall, Darkest Fear is not a story that I really liked, is very slow, I felt flat at times and I was not captured by the characters, plus it has an abrupt end. Definitely this book was not for me.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.
